I {heart} Faces - Week 12 Pet's

Yeah!  This week I heart faces has a pet category. I take a lot of pictures of my two dogs!

I took this picture of Molly after retrieving her from the canyon. She was all tuckered out from her big bad adventure.

Wordful Wednesday - Cookbook

As a young adult I found inspiration in the pages of Sunset Magazine. It was my guide to how to become a successful adult.

Sunset Magazine was going to teach me how to effortlessly serve up wonderful meals. To hold casual dinner parties on our beautiful multi tiered deck, surrounded by our gorgeous garden, while we sipped the best wine that California had to offer.

Yes, my dream was to live the good Western life depicted on the pages of Sunset magazine.

The first cookbook I ever purchased was this 1990 Annual edition of Sunset recipes. It's old, stained and well loved. Our favorite recipe from this book is without a doubt, the Cream of Broccoli Soup. It is also the only part of the Sunset life that I have accomplished.

I never achieved the ability to serve up casual dinner parties (entertaining intimidates me), we still don't have that beautiful multi tiered deck (but we do talk about putting one in), my yard only looks good because we paid to have someone else create it (it lives despite me) and I never drink wine (it makes me sick).

Each time I pull out my 1990 edition of Sunset recipes it reminds me of a time when I wished for such things and it makes me feel young again.

Well, I'm 41, so technically I'm still young-ish........but I think you know what a mean? Who knows, maybe someday we will live the life depicted in the pages of a magazine.

I'm now imagining Jim and I old and wrinkled, sitting on that deck with our gray haired friends, drinking well aged prune juice...........

Sunday Stuff

Have I ever mentioned that I am the back stage director for the School Performance at my daughters Elementary School?  Well, if I haven't I am now.

The Performance isn't until mid May, but as you can imagine I am swamped with a lot of preparation for the big week (we have 4 shows).

Costumes, props, figuring out stage directions and lighting............it's enough to make my heart palpitate.  And if this isn't enough, I also need to complete the yearbook for the 5th graders (continue to take pictures for the yearbook), plan Girl scout meetings and a camping trip and deal with everyday life.

So if I am not around a lot in the blogosphere you will know why.  I hate missing out on anything so I will make sure to visit all my favorites.

In the meantime, I took a few minutes today to do something crafty.  I needed a Congratulations card, so after seeing this adorable card on Crafty Makes I felt inspired and created this card.

Kim's card is way more adorable than mine, but I'm happy with the way my imitation came out!  If you like making cards jump on over to Kim's blog, Crafty Makes.  You are sure to find something that will bring you inspiration.

Materials for the card:
Paper & Fibers: Sugared by Basic Grey
Star: Nestibilities
Ink: Rangers Vintage photo

PSF - Spring and a rude visitor

Tomorrow, March 20th, is the first day of Spring!
I'm sure those of you that live in the snowy regions of the country are really looking forward to the change in seasons.

So in honor of Spring I wanted to share with you some beautiful orchid shots I took the other day at the botanical garden.

I love this one because it looks like it is smiling!

I find the orange and yellow colors in this orchid really soothing.

WE INTERRUPT THIS PLEASANT
post about lovely flowers to bring an unpleasant and unwelcome visitor to One Crafty Mama's backyard!!!

Yes folks....that is a western Rattle snake! As I was preparing this post about orchids I was interrupted by the loud barking of my dogs and the extremely loud warning shake of a RATTLE SNAKE!!

After getting the dogs inside (had to use a piece of chicken to bribe the stupid Chihuahua away from the fangs of death), I grabbed my camera and telephoto lens and zoomed in on the area where the dogs had been barking.

There were some intense moments until I found him. Make no mistake that I could hear him loud and clear!

Once I found him I snapped a quick picture and then ran across the street to get my neighbor Mark. Yes, I to can play the damsel in distress!

My wonderful neighbor came over, wrangled the snake onto a rake and dropped him in a plastic trash can. Then he took it down the canyon and released it.

I'm sure you can all imagine what was going through my head as Mark tried to get the snake (which took 30 minutes to capture)? I was doing what any good blogger would do. I was wondering to myself if it would be rude to run in and get my camera so I could document the snake wrangler!

I chose to hang out and be supportive!

PSF - My cat is insane!

I love my pets, I really do....but sometimes they drive me CRAZY.   I'm pretty sure that my cat Summer is trying to send me to the looney bin with her antics.

Summer scratches things (aka: furniture, rugs, curtains, screen doors) to get attention.
Scratching gets attention.

Not only does she get my attention, but she also gets the dogs attention.

Unfortunately for Summer, the dogs are on my side of the issue and they are more than willing to chase the cat when she is being naughty.

Don't fret cat lovers.....the dogs never hurt her.  However sometimes I can't help but wish one of them would eat her.

Is that wrong to want your dog to eat your cat? After all, aren't RAW diets the new craze for spoiled pets?

Wordful Wednesday - Cowgirls

Want to know what my city girls sometimes do when they are bored?

Why they rope each other.

Yes, I said rope....like the thing that real cowboys do with real cattle!

More often than not, it is Reid (big sister) roping Kate (little sister).
Kate may be smaller than Reid but she is one sassy little cowgirl.

Just look at the sassy determination on her face!

That look is why I love this picture so much.

Yee haw!

Now go check out the other Wordful Wednesday additions over at 7 Clown Circus!

PSF- Balance

Finding your balance and having a plan while visiting the tide pools is very important.

You must map out your every move.

You must test every rock for it's stability and slipperiness.
And you must make sure not to step on anything that you can hurt or can hurt you!

What does all of this mean for a picture taking mom?

It means loads of pictures of you in unnatural poses!
But that's okay, because it is pictures like this that tell a story.

Writers workshop - Normal Is!

The prompt for Kat's writers workshop that I am going to tackle this week is, "Normal is....."

So without further ado........
  • Normal is being cranky for no reason at all.
  • Normal is Reid saying, "I LOVE this song," to every song that comes on the radio.
  • Normal is the pooch of fat sitting on my belly. {curses belly fat}
  • Normal is Friday night dinner at moms house.
  • Normal is wanting to kick the cat in her furry ass for scratching the sofa.
  • Normal is blue eyes and a freckled nose.
  • Normal is getting older.
  • Normal is my camera near by.
  • Normal is my constant and unconditional love for my girls.
  • Normal is my future Grandchildren never inheriting anything old because I watch Oprah and Oprah says that I should simplify my life and get rid of my crap.
  • Normal is wanting to hold on to the crap for those just in case moments.
  • Normal is telling yourself that if you haven't needed the crap in the past 10 years then you probably won't ever need it!
Last but not least.......Normal is the writers workshop over at Mama's Losin it
Won't you come and play.....all the Normal bloggers are.

Wordful Wednesday - Guerilla Art

My favorite big city is Chicago.  It's big buildings, stores, museums, restaurants, and great public art displays make the city an exciting place to visit.

But what I find really fun is finding displays of guerilla art.

"Killing People is Rude."
Yes, it is!

Macro Monday -- Sea Life

I don't have a macro lens anymore, so I can't get those super close shots, but I do enjoy getting up close and personal with my telephoto lens.

So I am going to play along with Lisa's Chaos Macro Monday! This first picture is what a sea anemone looks like when the tide rolls out and leaves it exposed to the world.

I love how it tries to hide and protect itself with a bunch of ocean litter.

What kills me is that many visitors to the tide pools don't recognize that these clumps of broken shells are living creatures and they stomp all over them in their tennis shoes. Ouch!

I'll bet if they realized they were walking all over this lovely creature they would be much more careful!
