Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to the ER we go!

Teen + spooked horse = trip to the ER!  This is the equation that defined the majority of our Saturday afternoon.

The story goes something like this.  It was a beautiful day in our neck of the woods.  Sunny and warm.  A perfect day for being outside with the horses.

I had my camera in hand and was looking forward to catching the perfect picture for my 365 photo a day project.  Around here, Saturday's are about horse back riding lessons.  So there was no doubt in my mind what today's picture would reflect.

Reid and Jim were first up to ride.  Reid was on Newton.  He has the reputation of being a really mellow horse.  As Reid came around the arena towards me she said that Newt was acting really weird. He was snorting and was really jumpy.

A split second after I took this picture, Newt jerked his entire body to the right and took off like a bat out of hell.  The sudden movement caught Reid off guard and she went flying off of Newt landing on her butt in the arena dirt.

She was pretty shook up by the fall and complained that her butt hurt too bad to walk.  As Jim carried her out of the arena her face went white and her head flopped down onto his shoulder. As I realized that she had passed out I felt my heart sink towards my feet.

She came back around fairly quickly (even though it seemed like forever at the time) but she seemed a little disoriented and she kept closing her eyes saying she wanted to sleep. She also complained she couldn't hear.  Heart continuing to sink!

We called 911 and even though she seemed better by they time they arrived, they suggested that we let them take her to the hospital just to be on the safe side.  Who were we to argue?

Reid was rather mortified by all the fuss and was not happy that she had to wear a neck brace and be taped down to their back board.  I on the other hand was relieved that if anything was going to go wrong that their was an army of paramedics there to care for her.

At the hospital they got her in a gown, asked a bunch of questions and then whisked her off to x-ray where it was revealed that she had broken her tailbone.

This is a picture of a young girl that has no idea how much it is going to hurt having to sit in school all day on a broken tailbone.  But hey, she is just thinking of the stories she can tell......her first ambulance ride, her first x-ray, her first time fainting, her first broken bone, her first time drooling over a hot paramedic.

The only thing she is allowed to do a second time is drool over a hot paramedic!  The rest can be one time only events.

For those of you who have had to deal with serious medical issues or injury with your child, my heart goes out to all of you.  Reid will be fine, she is fine....but for that split second when we weren't sure what was going on with her, it was the worst feeling in the world.

Now I have to figure out how to convince the three of them that they really don't love horseback riding!!

Right, like that will happen.

Oh my stars1 I hope she gets to feeling better soon. Does she get to sit on a donut? :) What a perk. Almost as good as the hot paramedic!

Oh man!!! Poor girl! Poor you! I know all too well that moment(s) of uncertainty when you are trying to be calm but are screaming inside!

Thank goodess she's alright. Tell her that was THE one scare that is allotted to all adolescents and she's used it up. NO. MORE.

Owie! I can't even imagine. When we were in a car accident, I had to be taken in an ambulance, with a neck brace on a back board. Oh my gracious it was uncomfortable! it was ridiculous! I can't imagine the pain of a broken tail bone, it just sounds painful. My son was a preemie and spent 69 days in the hospital, so I know the scariness of having a kid sick/hurt and in a hospital!

Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I hope Reid feels better soon! I broke my tail bone when I was in college all I can say is "inflatable doughnut" I am sure she will not want one but it will make life so much more comfortable. I don't know how I would have sat in all my classes without one.

OUCH!!!!!

At least the Paramedic has cute!

Having three sons means they know us by our first names at the emergency room.

I feel for ya! So glad she will be fine.

She sure looks pretty in the hospital bed!

Oh my God! How horrible! I can't even imagine the fear and helplessness you must have experienced when this was happening. I'm so glad she is going to be OK but I'm sure this was beyond scary. And my son is never going to ride a horse. I'm adding that to the list now. Yikes!

Ohmygosh, that is so scary. It is weird because I just read another post on a blog that was talking about horses and I said I was afraid of them. I know two adult women that both have brain damage after being trampled by horses.

My prayers go out to your daughter and I hope she heals well and feels better soon.

Cheyenne fell off a horse her first time galloping when she was around 6, but wasn't hurt. I remembering everyone screaming that a rider was down and low and behold it was on own daughter.

Hugs

oh man!! a buisted butt takes forever to heal, poor kid.

i am glad she is going to be ok!!

best thing for her to do is heal and get right back up on that horse again...even if you don't like that idea.

As my Katie sez, OMG!! Has your heartrate returned to normal yet? And at least Jim was there, too. We're thinking of you....

Awe poor Reid, I hope she has a speedy recovery and is back in the saddle soon.

Having to sit back and watch your child in pain is the worse feeling there is. Glad you both made it though okay!

Oh how scary! When it comes to your kids there is nothing scarier than when they are hurt or sick and you don't know why.
I am glad that things turned out alright. I hope that she and you are feeling better.

Oh scary! I am glad she is alright! Except of course for the tailbone. That will hurt for a very long time. I broke mine in High School and it still hurts sometimes.

Poor thing. I would have freaked seeing that horse freak out and my daughter fly off......glad it was *only* a broken tail bone. Will she be sporting a donut pillow for awhile? :)

Oh - your heart must have been in your mouth! Hope that tailbone heals fast and so glad that she's otherwise OK.

Aaaack!!! I just knew when I saw the photo of her on the gurney (sp?) that she would HATE that! My 14 yr. old would react the same way. Sorry you had to go through that---and glad that your husband was there to help deal with everything. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.

Oh, man! Glad she's OK. I know my own mom once had the experience of looking up from her book during one of my riding lessons and suddenly seeing my horse without its (12-year-old) rider. The horse's head had jerked back and smacked me near the eye while balking at a jump, and I passed out while still on the horse. And as in your case, I am sure my mom was the far more freaked out person in the scenario...luckily I avoided a hospital visit. Had a nice black eye for a week, though! :)

Oh my, what a scary time...I can't imagine! I'm glad she's fine and got to check out some eye candy while she was there, hehe.

OMG! I am so sorry. I am glad he is doing Ok but I can imagine how scary that is. I KNOW it is a matter of time until I go through something with my 5yo. The only blood I have seem come out of him was a tiny amount from his lip a long long time ago.
