Writing Assignment!

Yes Ladies (and Gentlemen) it is that time of the week again.....time to get out your pen and paper and get writing with Kat over at Mama's Losin' It!

This week I am picking writing prompt numero uno........Complete the sentence "I'd walk a mile for a ________." and continue writing about it.

I'd walk a mile for a chance to head back to 1987 to remember what it was like to be my husbands girl friend again.  Let's take a little stroll down memory lane.

Back in September of 1987 I was a newly minted 20 year old in college, taking my second semester of Spanish.  On the first day of class our instructor insisted that we all pick Spanish names.  The names we picked would be the ones we would use all semester long.  I quickly jotted down my favorite Spanish names, but much to my dismay the instructor started on the opposite side of the room and by the time she got around to me the names on my list had already been picked.  In a moment of panic I blurted out the only Spanish name I could think of.......LOLA!!  The class laughed and I turned several shades of red.

We had a really fun class.  Our instructor gave us plenty of opportunities to get to know each other and it wasn't long before I was in a group project with the hippy looking dude with the red curly hair named Diego.

I liked Diego right away......he was funny, quirky, and super sweet.  He was 6 years my senior, grew up in a small town back east and had served in the Navy for four years.  I had been dating boys only a few years out of High School so in comparison Diego seemed like a man of the world.

We flirted, he made me laugh and next thing you know, we started dating.  I remember the first time he asked me out like it was yesterday.  Since we only knew each other by our Spanish names I thought I should ask him what his "real" name was.  He turned to me and said, "Jim......G-Y-M."  I was hooked!

I remember one day we were heading to our usual after class lunch date and he said something that made me laugh out loud.  In that moment he looked over at me and said, "Some day you won't think I'm this funny."  I smiled and thought......."No way will that ever happen."

Little did I know that someday I would forget how to be that girl sitting in Diego's VW van giggling at some stupid joke he made just to make me laugh.  Some where a long the way I allowed myself to become Reid and Kate's mom and Jim's wife.  I got comfortable in my new role and let that fun girl friend slip away.

So I sit here ladies trying to figure out how bring back Diego's girl friend Lola!  Any idea's? A seance perhaps?  I know she is down there some where......I just have to drag her back up!!!

******************************************
I almost forgot to mention that Jo Jo over at A Moms World of Madness and Blessings is having her very first give away and it is a cool one!

And a quick thanks to Marla and Kelsey for my cool new bloggy awards.  I promise to post about them really soon!

Well I hear "Lola" and all I can think of is Barry Manilow - could you play some Barry Manilow would that help?

I love your writing - what a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Hey Lola!

Speaking of Diego, you from SD?

Wanna be freaky-deaky girlfriend again? Text him "naughty" messages during the day every now and then. I'm serious. It works. He'll come running home with bells on. I think it's those little things that guys like. Not long thought out/drawn out romantic stuff.

I really liked your post today..
Isn't it funny how we let go of peices of ourselves daily.. although who we are becoming doesn't make us sad.. It's just a little remembering is always good..

I hope you find your inner Lola..

Lose the kids. They morph us into responsible human beings. Lose them for a weekend. Lola will come.

What a sweet story! Do you guys ever call each other by your old Spanish names?

Great story!! I love the newness of a relationship...and I really think that is a problem in alot of marriages/relationships-- we become comfortable and complacent and "forget" how to want to look good for each other and have fun with each other. maybe you two could try to go out once a week without kids....spice it up!!

This story is so cute! Yes, I often wish I could go back to being my husband's girlfriend-- back to the nights where we would spend HOURS just making out on the couch!

I can't even remember the last time I made out with my husband. Oh, a project for tonight! :)

I love this post, though it made me a little sad, too. I know all about losing the fun girl... you just have to look really hard (and I agree with Kathy... lose the kids for a little while! It works wonders!).

PS... I LOVE your blog header!! It's gorgeous! Where did you get it?

Hmmm ... maybe you can try to "re-create" that college time with a date ... see if you can rent a VW similar to what "Diego" had, and call each other those names the entire night ... see if you can find a place that reminds you of the "lunch break" place ... and maybe try wearing the 1987 clothes just to make it seem more authentic. Just a thought ... there's always role-playing.

A great story. I know what it's like to change and to feel like you've lost a part of yourself. I say, leave the kids at home with a babysitter and go see a comedian. My hubby and I just did that and it was great (and it was nice to laugh at "adult" things, too). And remember, some day it will be just you and your husband again, so if it's too hard to go back to girlfriend personality now, you can always promise yourself then.

Great post! I don't know how to find her--I have only been married a year and I've already lost my "Lola!" I need to go find her IMMEDIATELY!

What a sweet post and just what I needed to hear today. Maybe I will even get out of my pjs and put on some makeup for my man!

I think just by remembering the good ol' days you're already partway there. Now have Lola invite Diego to a romantic rendevous either while the kids are being babysat or while they're in bed. I think scheduling some grown up time is SUPER HARD but super worth it if you do it consistently. Good luck miss Lola girl!

Send the kids away for the night. Go on a real date. When you get home, change into something that will end up on the bedroom floor. You'll both be smiling the next day. :)

to answer your question on my blog...yep-lots of kids dressed up. My daughter told me more than half did. She's going to her own schools Homecoming dance this weekend and will wear her formal dress there. so much fun. Ahhh to be young again!

Crank the radio to the spanish station, put on a frilly skirt, fry up some spanish rice, put a rose in your hair, and wear one of those 'Hello my name is Lola' stickers on your shirt while you dance around the kitchen. :-D

I loved your blog. I've only been with my husband for five years, and even in that little bit of time, I forgot how to be that carefree, naive, gullible girl that he loved so much. So, to get her back - I quit worrying about the little things, I give him great big kisses for taking out the trash, and when he talks to me about (rather mundane stuff), I hold his hand and look in his eyes.

Little by little, I'm that giddy, love sick girl all over again.

Mama Kat's right. Go away for a trip without the kids, and Lola will come right back. :) (I know; easier said than done, isn't it?)

Loved the story ....... A getaway would be nice for you two, BUT please after you figure out how to make it work around kids and schedules let me know, I could use a getaway with my husband also. :)

I love the look of your blog, and your post was very heartfelt. I agree... lose the kids. (Lola makes me think of Eric Clapton.) Start with a romantic, fun dinner... maybe at a place you used to frequent... and visit a conversion van showroom to fantasize about a purchase.

Oh how I loved this, Michelle. And now I know where your daughter got her red hair.

It's so hard to try to resurrect our old selves......I don't know if I could if I tried.

So, I'm going to stick with hoping the new me cuts the muster. :)

Ah.... wouldn't it be great to go back to being just the girlfriend sometimes?? How poignant.

Great post.

I think by thinking about it now and wondering, you're 1/2 way there. I love the suggestions about "suggestive texts". Or even just sitting there, doing nothing and watch him. I know that sounds weird, but with everything around you, you probably tend to think of all the other stuff going on in life most of the time.

Have fun with it!! :)
