Obsession.....by Michelle!

It's writing assignment time again over at Kat's pad! Here are the prompts if you feel like you just might want to play along this week:

1.) Describe your latest obsession.

2.) Ask a loved one to use 6 descriptive words to describe you and report your findings. How well do they know you?

3.) Who was your first bloggy friend? How did you find each other? Do you still correspond?

4.) Tell us about your pet! If you have a weird infatuation with your dog or cat we want to hear about it (or if they just plain drive you crazy)...but p
lease don't compare them to children. It's just not the same.

I could write about all four but I am going to choose #1.

My obsession isn't really new, it is actually a long standing obsession. A twelve year obsession to be exact. My obsession is with buying scrapbook supplies.

It gives me great joy to buy new scrapbook supplies. So much so that each year I pay money to shop at the Scrapbook Expo. Last August I bought a ton of great stuff (that I really didn't need).

Funky paper like stickers, trendy patterned papers, chip board letters, sticky felt cut outs, brads with matching flowers, stamps, nestibilites........the list goes on. Usually when I buy a ton of new supplies I head home and lay them all out so I can stare at them. Makes me feel all warm and snugly inside.

Then the new supplies find their place in my hyper organized craft towers.

Would you like to know the most ridiculous thing about my ever growing obsession with buying scrapbook supplies? You do? Good.

The most ridiculous thing about my obsession is that I have the hardest time actually using the supplies I buy. Every year, as I head off to the Expo I realize that I still have stacks of supplies I bought the previous year that I haven't even touched.

It's really kind of neurotic of me. I buy a pack of shiny embellishments and I think to myself, "You know, if I use them then I won't have them anymore." Or if I have something really special, I feel I have to wait for the perfect page to use it.

Last year one of my resolutions was to stop hoarding my supplies and use them with reckless abandon. I'd say I'm currently at the cautious abandon level.

I have a new rule. When I buy something new I have to use it before the next years Expo rolls around!  Baby steps people, baby steps.

Back to my obsession........I can only imagine how much it has cost me over the years. I told the girls that if I ever die unexpectedly that they are to call my friend Tina, as she would know how much everything is worth. They could sell everything on ebay and probably send both of the girls to college with the proceeds.

So do we have any other scrapbook supply hoarders in the house? Hoarding something different? Come on, let's hear all about it! I know I'm not the only wacko in the bunch!

OHmygosh, there are more than one! I do this same thing. My sister is a scrapper. Her friends are all published. But once she commented that I had more stuff then she did. Maybe because I never used it. I just LOVE to collect and shop for it. I'm also trying not to buy more til I use what I have. In fact I'm giving away lots of stuff, I no longer like!

Mine is not as organized as yours though, I should post a photo!! lol

I bought my very first scrapbook for my daughter over the holidays. Is this what is in store for me? Is this what I am to become?

Giiiirl...this is why i don't scrapbook! i collected stuff to start for a long time and never did anything with it. i am so afraid of making a less than perfect book that i cannot bring myself to even start...sad.

LOL I love your reasons for not using it...maybe a teeeny tiny bit obsessive hehe. I guess I shouldn't say anything....My dear DIL scrapbooks and so I have gone in to some of the really cool scrapbook stores with her when I visit her in Utah. I've been known to get carried away and actually buy scrapbook stuff....and I DON'T scrapbook ever lol. So I guess that's much worse!

I think I have everyone beat. I collect scrapbook supplies and I dont even scrap!!! I used to, like maybe 6 years ago? But for somereason when I see cute sitckers, pretty paper, or something sparkly I feel this compulsion to grab it! Fortunately my sister DOES scrap so I force myself to part with some of my goodies for her birthday or christmas presents.

They don't call you "One Crafty Mama" for nothing! I can completely understand your obsession. It's why I've started in with digital scrapbooking. I started to realize just how much space (and glue and waste and time) I was going to have to feed the obsession, and I decided that it would be way easier that way.

You should post some of the fruits of your obsession sometime :)

I used to scrapbook all the time - before it became digitized LOL :) Haven't picked it up for so long but YOU make it look like SO much fun!! :)

P.S. I horde lip gloss. Yep. Really.

I think this is totally something I could get into providing the time and money!

OMG!!! I do the SAME THING with other items... like gorgeous paper napkins, or wrapping paper, or just about anything... I get all worried if I use them... they'll be GONE!

I'm getting a little better... but like you said... baby steps.

I understand obsessing, I really do but I don't under this one. Crafting does nothing for me but I guess it does wonders for you hence your blog name. You should keep on Crafting. :)

I so wish I could scrapbook....everyone around here does it, and it looks so great. I wouldn't even know where to start to make a page.

Collecting scrapbook supplies....hmmm...let me think about this. I have an entire room in my house dedicated to the hobby and it's full of supplies...does that count!? I too feel the same way about using the good stuff. It's hard to let go! I have gotten much better over the years. Seriously....that good stuff looks so much better when used creatively then sitting in your hyper organized tower!
Scrap on Sister!

Haha. I'm glad I'm not the only one that hoards my scrapbook stuff for that "perfect" page. I'm so bad about that! I need to learn to use it and buy more later. And I also buy scrapbooking supplies that I don't need.

What a great resolution - use your craft items with reckless abandon - I tend to hoard my stuff for a "good" occasion.....you have inspired me!

Don't you just love scrapbooking paper? I've got a whole box of it....I even like the smell!

You are too funny. A few years ago, I went to my first stamping party. I had big plans. I bought so many stamps that have never touched an ink pad. It really is sad;)

I'm so glad you're out there. I no longer feel alone. I tend to use things I have more than one of but not things that I only have one. It's dumb, isn't it?

I feel ya! I love buying scrapbook stuff. however, Im totally NOT a hoarder. I love using my supplies. they want to be used. theyre sad if I leave them in the box!

Oh god... this post could have been written by me. I am OBSESSED withg scrapbooking. I live in a 580sf condo and one entire giant walk-in closet (which SHOULD be holding clothes and mops and coats and things) is instead 99% devoted to scrapbook materials in those plastic bins... and that's not counting the bins jammed under my bed!

I also have that crazy "if I use it it's gone forever!" panic when I go to use something really nice. I also find I really have to be in the right mood to actually sit and scrapbook, or my pages come out horrible and I get major anxiety that I'm wasting my lovely supplies on sub-par pages... I'm not above redoing inferior pages. it's a little sick but it's so true.

great post! :)

The cost is just one of many reasons my scrapbooking was a short lived hobby.....

let's start a support group.

hi, my name is anne, and i hoard scrapbook supplies.

i'm just starting to break down and actually use things i have... and if you catch me on a good day, i MAY share... that is if i dont have a panic attach because you want to use one of my embellishments (that just happppppens to be one of my favorites... amongst the other 10,000)... you know the feeling.

anyway... i'm a hoarder.

:)

Wow! You know, you need to head on over to this blog and see her obsession post if you haven't been there already ... I think you are two peas in a pod:

http://kisatrtleskreativekorner.blogspot.com/2009/01/lets-talk-obsession.html

I don't know if she has been here yet but I'm going to send her over to you just. I think you two should meet!

I love your contingency plan for if you die and disposing of your scrapping assets. I love that you think things are too pretty to use and you don't because then you won't have them anymore!

Awesome!

And I'm going to check out your new blog too!

I would probably hoard more if we had more moo-lah! :o) As it is I don't time to use what I do have!

kisatrtle said...

Dang...why do you have to be on the West Coast when I'm on the East? We should meet in the middle and scrap...the problem is we'd each need our own bus to bring all our crap...I mean supplies.

I loved your post!

This was a really funny post, made even better by the comments. You're in good company, girl! It's hard to control this kind of compulsion - I feel the same way about art supplies and yarn, but I don't produce enough to justify the expense. I'm afraid digital is the way to go... What the hey, life is short. Enjoy!!

I buy things with good intentions and then before I know it my baby is 8 and I've only scrapbooked the first year of his life...! I gave up using the supplies a long time ago. But that doesn't stop me from buying it, OH NO!

I like to shop too...i just find it hard to find the time to sit and make a book. I did a scrapbook of my daughters sweet 16 the following Christmas and she said it was her favorite gift.

So the next kids bday I made a book for him. Loved it.

Well, the other kids' bday came all too fast after that and I have 4 more to make! I'm pretty amateur but wish I had all that great stuff you do!

I have so many scrapbooking supplies and I haven't even scrapped in about 3 years! I worked at a scrapbooking store at one point and had a 30% discount. Very smart of the owner. We all spent most of our pay checks there!

Kristi said...

I don't do scrapbooking (totally wish I had some though, just not into doing it myself... Can you pay someone to do them?). Buuuut, I do the SAME thing. I buy really cool stuff and never use it, for fear of not having it anymore! I don't feel so alone now! Thanks!

Wow, there is nothing I buy so much of but don't use. That's funny. You could set up shop and put Hallmark out of business.
